Smoke Detector

APPLICATION
The Protector Model 03 Explosion Proof Smoke Detector is a sensitive yet rugged, state-of-the-art protection device that is designed for use in hazardous industrial and commercial locations. The detector is designed to operate effectively with both slow smoldering and fast burning fires. Typical applications that use the Model 03 include:

  • Combustible storage facilities.
  • Munitions manufacturing.
  • Volatile chemical storage.
  • Chemical processing plants.
  • Petroleum refineries.
  • Turbine enclosures.

DESCRIPTION
The photoelectric smoke detector uses a solid state infrared emitting diode (IRED) and a light sensing photovoltaic cell arranged in a labyrinth assembly. The labyrinth permits free access to smoke but restricts external light. Because of its critical function to the operation of the detector, each IRED is selected with extreme care and is subjected to rigorous pre-production testing to ensure long-term reliability and performance.

During normal operation (no smoke), the detector samples the air approximately every four seconds for a period of less than one millisecond. The photovoltaic smoke cell, which is placed at an angle to the pulsed invisible light source, is sensitive to the infrared light in the specified frequency emitted by the IRED light source and is designed to receive a signal only when the pulsed IRED source is activated.

When smoke enters the chamber, the light from the IRED reflects off the smoke particles and reaches the photovoltaic smoke cell. When the amount of light reflected by smoke reaches the factory set threshold level, the smoke alarm circuit is actuated.

The detector will respond to a slow smoldering fire when smoke in the chamber reaches the preset sensitivity setting, typically 1.5%.

If a fast burning fire should occur, including fires in flammable liquids and other materials such as plastics that generate black smoke, the abnormally rapid movement of smoke into the detection chamber is sensed by a special rate compensating circuit. An increase in smoke within the detection chamber that exceeds a preset rate causes the rate compensation circuit to increase the intensity of the light source, which increases detector sensitivity. If the smoke continues to build at this rate, an amplifier circuit is triggered and the unit generates an alarm. If not, the detector reverts to normal sensitivity.

In normally smoky atmospheres the detector will not go into alarm as long as the concentration is less than the fixed sensitivity of the detector. This results in a sensitive and positive response with the lowest potential for unwanted alarms.

Explosion Proof
Smoke Detector

APPLICATION
The Pyrotector Model 03D Explosion-Proof Air Duct Smoke Detector is designed to detect the presence of smoke for the primary purpose of controlling blowers and dampers in air conditioning and ventilation systems and is intended for use in hazardous industrial and commercial locations. The unit mounts directly to heating, ventilating, and air conditioning ducts and utilizes a cross sectional sampling tube arrangement that allows large volume air sampling. The Model 03D is intended to serve as a supplement rather than a substitute for open area detection.

The explosion-proof air duct smoke detector is intended to be connected to a control unit and function as part of a fire protection system. The 03D is designed for use with a 4-wire system fire alarm control panel (2 wires for detector power and 2 wires for detector output).

The detector operates on the forward light scattering principle, a technology that is based on more than 30 years of experience in advanced photoelectric detection systems.

FEATURES

  • Explosion-proof housing is designed for use in Division 1, Class I, Groups C and D; Class II, Groups E, F, and G; Class III hazardous locations.
  • Trouble-free photoelectric operation. Standard 4-wire 24 vdc operation.
  • Designed to meet ANSI/UL 268A smoke obscuration limits.
  • 600 to ft/min airflow range.
  • Rugged design for environmental extremes.

DESCRIPTION
The Model 03D uses air sampling tubes to provide a cross sectional sampling of air moving through the duct. Inlet sampling tubes are available in four lengths: one foot, three feet, six feet, and ten feet. The desired length must be specified when ordering.

The length of the inlet sampling tube is determined by the width of the duct to be monitored. The inlet duct should cover the entire width of the duct, therefore, specify the shortest sampling tube that is at least the width of the duct to be protected. It can then be cut to the exact length at the job site.

Outlet tubes are one common length. Both inlet and outlet tubes are furnished with each detector.

EXPLOSION-PROOF CERTIFICATION
The Model 03D is certified by the German Electric Industry Association, VDE to meet standards /"Special Protection" (EX)s G5 (sand encapsulated), for ignition groups EExe11T5.

ENGINEERING SPECIFICATIONS
The explosion proof air duct photoelectric smoke detector shall lock in on alarm and have an alarm indicator LED visible through the air sampling chamber cover. Detectors shall be mounted exterior to the duct, with perforated sampling tubes. Activation of a detector shall cause shutdown of associated equipment through the control circuitry of the fire alarm panel. The detector shall be mounted in a readily accessible location.

The detector shall have SPST alarm contact for the fire alarm control panel and power supervision. In addition, the detector shall be capable of activating a remote indicating lamp on a remote annunciator.

The detector unit shall be designed to meet NEC requirements for Class I, Groups C and D; Class II, Groups E, F, and G; and Class III hazardous locations. A rated junction box shall be furnished for connecting the system wiring.
